A bit of statistics – small and medium business IT budgets scored a hit in 2009 versus 2008 spending levels. At the time when 39% of SMB IT professionals report of their budget cuts in 2009, that is averaging a 22% reduction, the news is not all dire.

31% aer reporting that IT budgets are quite flat if compare to 2008, while 30% of SMBs are actually reporting about the IT budget increases at 2009, averaging 27%.

However, the bottom line is SMB IT budgets at 2009 held up much better than economic conditions seemed to indicate. The average SMB IT budget across all groups (increase, decrease, flat) declined only 1 percent. The average 2009 SMB IT budget was $108,000.

According to a new Borrell Associates Inc. report, small and medium businesses, i.e. SMBs, are increasingly looking online to attract more and more new consumers. This report finds that SMBs plan to increase significantly their online advertising budgets – by nearly 29%, to $40.6 billion from $31.5 billion. SMBs accounted for 19.5% of total online ad spending last year. Borrell Associates Inc. estimates that that percentage will rise this year to 23.1%.
